Overview

The S-Series Saturn is an amazing animal. Through three different generations and many different models something like 90% of the parts will swap over. This allows for the possibility to pick and choose from all the stock parts. You can come up with a "super stock" motor that incorporates the best designs of each year. Should you go this route, it is entirely possible to come up with a higher compression N/A motor or a lover compression Turbo motor just by swapping parts. You are warned, if undertake this challenge make sure you know what you are doing. Some parts are not compatible if you get the wrong combination. This can lead to a locked up or blown motor. Having said that I will repeat, Use this guide at your own risk.

All parts are for the DOHC engine unless otherwise noted.

"?" May appear after a year. This indicates it is not certain exactly when a part update occurred.

Cylinder Blocks
  • 1991-2002 All Blocks are compatible. All crankshafts are not! See crankshafts for more info.

*ARP Main Studs: Part# 165-4202

Crankshafts
  • 1991-1992 Will only function with 91-92 PCM due to position of reluctor ring notches. If used with any other PCM crank timing will be off.
  • 1993-1998 Will fit any block.
  • 1999-2002 Redesigned heavier crank. Will fit any block.
Rods
  • 1991-1998 Compatible
  • 1999-2002 Redesigned with a greater length. Will only work with 99-02 pistons.
Pistons
  • 1991-1993 Dished top, thicker dome. Compatible with 91-98 Rods.
  • 1994-1998 Smaller Dish. Compatible with 91-98 Rods.
  • 1999-2002 Raised Wrist Pin. Compatible ONLY with 99-02 Rods.
Valves
  • 1991-1993 Flat Faced
  • 1994-1998 Dished Face

*You can combine 91-93 valves with 94-98 pistons for a "slight" bump in compression. You can also combine 94-98 valves with 91-93 pistons for a "slight" decrease in compression.

Cylinder Heads
  • 1991 Saturns first try. Sometimes you just don't get it right the first time around. This is a prime example. Don't mess with it.
  • 1992-1994 Vacuum EGR. Two Coolant temp sensors.
  • 1995 First year for Linear (electronic) EGR. Two Coolant temp sensors.
  • 1996-1998 Linear EGR. One Coolant temp sensor.
  • 1999-2002 Roller Lifter with smaller ports.

*All heads are compatible with all blocks. Make sure you use the correct timing cover for the head you are using.

**If you wish to use a 91-94 Head with a Linear/Electronic EGR (for OBDII applications) you can install the adapter plate designed for the 1994 California emissions package. (Saturn Part #21006753)
