A/C Compressor Indicator Light

Here is the scenario. You have been in the grocery for about six hours. Stuck at the checkout behind the little old lady with six months worth of groceries in the 12 items or less lane. You finnaly get outside into the blazing heat only to step into that blast furnace that you call a car. You crank up your trusty air conditioning, and race home like Mario Andretti. One small problem, the car isnt cooling down. Is your A/C busted? Is the compressor shot? Probably not. You are experiencing a little feature the engineers designed into your cars computer. Of you push the accelerator past 80% throttle the computer decides that it is more important to go fast that it is to get cool. This is not entirely bad if you are trying to cross that crossing before the train turns your lettuce into tossed salad. It is however slightly annoying if you are trying to cool down a blazing car.

Here is a handy little gadget to help you know when your computer is trying to disengage the A/C compressor's clutch.

Here is what you need:

  • One LED (Light Emitting Diode) (any color)
  • About 5 to 6 foot of electrical wire
  • About 12" of electrical wire

Here We Go

  1. Set your parking brake, and block your wheels.

  2. Disconnect the Negative terminal of your battery.

  3. Locate the positive lead (green) from the A/C Compressor Clutch.

  4. Splice your length of wire into this lead.

  5. Locate a convinent location to place your indicator light.

  6. Run your length of wire from the engine bay into the cockpit through one of the pre-existing grommets in the firewall and connect it to one of the leads on your LED indicator light.

  7. Ground the other lead of your LED.

  8. Reconnect your battery.

  9. Start your engine with the A/C OFF. The indicator light should not be lit.

  10. Turn on the A/C. The indicator light should come on.

  11. If your light is not functioning properly, ensure that your connection to the A/C Clutch wire is secure, and that there are no shorts in the circuit.
